Are AKC registered breeders reliable?

Asked: Are AKC registered breeders reliable?

My sister wants a dog for her birthday. She was very specific. She wanted a Maltese. I have been to local animal shelters and have not found one. I am reluctant to use breeders- I fear they will come from puppy mills. Are American Kennel Club breeders reliable? Thanks!

Just about any crap brained breeder can get a dog with AKC papers and breed them or get fake/fault papers on a dog.

These days you just cannot be to careful.

Your best be would be going to your Breeds Club of America and searching there. http://www.americanmaltese.org/ama_breed

http://www.americanmaltese.org of the Maltese Club of America Site and it only has a list of the most REPUTABLE breeders.

Don't automatically assume that just because a breeder has a puppy with AKC papers, that you are out of the woods as far as it goes with backyard breeders and badly bred dogs.
