How do you know when your dog is done giving birth?
Preston Asked: How do you know when your dog is done giving birth?
She has had 8 now, and her stomach is alot smaller now, how do I know when she'll be done? Is there a time like hours? And also should I help the puppies get to a nipple or will they eventually find one? Especially with 8 it'll be hard won't it? Any advice is much appreciated.

You will know she is done when all the puppies are out. Help the puppies get to the nipple. Each puppy will be able to have it's own nipple, too.

when my dog gave birth you could tell by her breathing that she was about to deliver another and by the way she was straining we were only expecting for pups but after the fourth one about ten mins later a fifth arrived .. i guided the pups to the teet but in the end we had to hand feed as my dog wouldnt allow them to suckle =/ you will know when she is dont she wont be straining or panting and should seem alot more relaxed

For my cat it took her with in an hour for 5. She will know when she is done. And you can help but use a towel not your skin. You don't want to put your scent on the baby. Plus it all depends on if mommy wants your help.

You should have known exactly how many pups she was to whelp from all of her prenatal checks she has been getting,weren't any ultra sounds or radio graphs taken to determine how many pups she had?You need to speak with your vet regarding any other questions as they are your best bet for accurate and reliable info,she will need a post whelp check within the next 24 hours so ask all your Q's than.

since you didnt get xrays you dont know the count.

but, if she seems comfortable and is not acting like there is a problem then they probably are all born.if you wish to do a bit more in detecting a problem. place the mom on her side on the floor and gently run your hand along her side, the abdominal area…using slight pressure as your hand moves along you would be able to feel if a pup remained….if you wish you can place the pups to a nipple,good luck with the litter.
