My new dog is very nervous around me and rolls on his back?

MrLiambc Asked: My new dog is very nervous around me and rolls on his back?

My family just got a dog from the pound, he is a cross between a lab and an american staford (1 year old). Any time he comes over to me he rolls over on his back and shows me his belly. I know this is a sign of submission, but he doesnt do it for anyone else, is there something Im doing wrong?

he wants you to scratch his tummy then he will leave you alone if he gets boredit is a sign that he likes you not like like just puppy love have you never had a dog

No it means he's clearly bonded with you and knows you're his pack leader. You're lucky this has already happened so quickly as they can be very proud and dominant dogs, but clearly he knows you're his boss. It's a good thing!

But if he's shaking like crazy while on his back, then it means he knows you're the pack leader but is frightened of you and really nervous around you. Just put your hand slowly out towards him and let him sniff it. Don't do it on one big step. Just put it about 1-2 feet from him, get it closer, then closer etc. That way you're approaching him and respecting him, and then let him sniff it and then pet him gently and rub his tummy.

I don't think so. Usually rolling on their belly means they are submitting to you and/or they feel comfortable enough in their home. At least, that's what I've been told/learned.
